International Environmental Weed
Foundation weed identification introduction
People working in, or living near, a natural area have a wealth of knowledge about
the weeds found in their
area but mostly this is not documented, or if
it is, it is not accessible by others.
In an effort to preserve and
share this knowledge this information is being collected
and built into
simple plant identification systems.
There are two systems being
used by IEWF and its community/school/university projects to preserve and present this
1. "Key of IEWF Keys"
Is the gateway to weed identification
keys which have been built by
IEWF projects using Lucid software.
At present their is only 1 demonstration key available for Cobbitty, NSW built by students from
University of Sydney and Baptist Hong Kong University.
As a first time user you will need to read the getting started
information which will
help ensure that you have the latest version of
Java and have allowed pop-ups both of
which are required to view the
keys with all images showing. It will take a few minutes
to set things
up however you only need do this once. After getting to the key of your
choice you can then save this entry point to your "favourites" list for
Click on "Key of IEWF Keys"
Home page to start.
2. "Web Weed Lookup"
By clicking on "Web Weed Lookup" on the Home page you will be taken to a very simple
lookup by region with plants displayed in alphabetic order for both scientific name and common name.
There are also links to websites, which have been developed independently, for specific areas.
With the approval of the developers of these sites we have incorporated links rather than trying
to reproduce what has already been done so well. Thank you to everyone who has allowed us
to include their links.
Both "Key of IEWF Keys" and "Web Weed Lookup" will be
permanantly under development as more and more information is added.
These are living
and flexible systems for accumulating useful
information about weeds.
If you would like to add information for your local area please send an email to
firstname.lastname@example.org we can show you how.
